LESLEY GORE, 68. Died Feb. 16, 2015.
Reportedly discovered in 1963 at the age of 16. Signed by Mercury Records Music Director Quincy Jones who produced her first big hit "It's My Party" (#1, 1963) Jones rushed the release of the song to beat out a Phil Spector-produced version of the same song by the Crystals by two weeks.
Then, she had a string of hits: "Judy's Turn to Cry" (#5, 1963), "She's a Fool" (#5, 1964), "You Don't Own Me" (#2, 1964), "Maybe I Know" (#14, 1964), "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows" (#13, 1965).
Often referred to as the younger Connie Francis.
No one could do a Girl Group song better than her, even if she sang by herself.
