Born in Detroit in 1942 and her first recordings were gospel At 18, she signed with Columbia and began secular singing. Her biggest hit there was "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby (With a Dixie Melody" (#37-1961).
In 1967 her career really kicked off when she moved to Atlantic Records and legendary producer Jerry Wexler started working with her. he took her to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and she had a hit with "I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Loved You)" (#9-1967).
The two then recorded what would become Aretha's signature song, the Otis Redding song "Respect" (#1-1967)
