Creedence Clearwater Revival-- Part 1: The Golliwogs

We have been riding around in the '03 Malibu with the CD "Cosmo's Factory" in the player.  Just an amazing album.  If someone asked me to name my favorite 1960s-1970s band, iy would have to be CCR, although I sure liked a lot of the groups.

This is a very good write up on the group.

From the May 14, 2002, Spinner.

Tom Fogerty was three years older than John and the leader of the band, but realized John had the goods.  "I could sing, but John had a sound."

They had a band called the Blue Velvets which became the Golliwogs with schoolmates Stu Cook on bass and Doug Clifford on drums.  Then came THE NAME, which was taken from John's friend Credence Newball and a beer commercial touting their mountain spring water.

They first cracked the charts in 1968 with Dale Hawkins' swamp classic "Susie-Q" and Screaming Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell On You."

In 1969, they really broke through with three albums in the Top 100 and five #2s, but never had a #1 song as surprising as that may seem.
